WORK to build a new hospital and hundreds of homes in Colchester is expected to start next year.

Plans to build up to 350 homes, a care home, and a private hospital on land off Axial Way were given the green light in December last year.

The approved blueprints are part of Colchester Council’s wider Northern Gateway scheme, with the land sitting close to a multi-million pound leisure park which is under construction.

Work is yet to start at the site, much of which was formerly home to Colchester Rugby Club before it moved to nearby Colchester Sports Park, despite 12 months passing since planning approval was given.

Mile End councillor Martin Goss suggested work could commence in the new year.

He said: “As far as I know, things are moving forward but going at a slower pace than we originally thought.

“The company involved is running at a slower pace but we're talking tens of millions of pounds here, so it is a slow process.

“It's still moving forward; I think 2024 will be the year.”

Mr Goss also provided some insight into the care facilities which are planned for the site.

“In terms of the care facility, we haven’t got enough care and hospital facilities in Colchester,” he explained.

“Although it is a private facility, it’s needed to provide care for an ageing population with a need for a generational health facility where people will live there and receive healthcare on site.

“There’s clearly a market for it.”

The plans also include provisions for office space spanning the size of six Premier League football pitches, as well as new shops and space for a restaurant or café.

The major scheme is estimated to be worth tens of millions of pounds and could create as many as 2,600 full-time jobs in Mile End.

Work on the neighbouring Northern Gateway Leisure Park, next to the Colchester United football stadium, started early last year.

On completion, the site will become home to a 12-screen Cineworld cinema, a Hollywood Bowl bowling alley, a Travelodge hotel, and several restaurants.
