A MAN from Colchester has admitted to dangerous driving and failing to stop after he injured a man while taking part in a car cruising event near an Essex shopping centre.

Keaton Elliot, 25, of Cowdray Avenue was arrested following a collision at a car cruising event near Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock.

He was driving a Skoda Fabia at the time of the incident.

A large number of spectators were gathered in the West Thurrock Way area when a person was hit on Sunday, May 1 just before 10.55pm.

The police were called to the scene, where they dealt with the incident. The person who was involved in the collision was said to have not been seriously hurt.

Elliot attended Colchester Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he admitted dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

He is due to be sentenced at a later date and has been given an interim driving ban until then.

At the time of the incident, Temp Chief Insp Atkin, district commander for Thurrock said: “Car cruising events can be intimidating and cause disruption for residents, but they also pose a very real danger to those taking part.

“In this particular case, someone has sustained potentially serious injuries and we’re investigating what led up to them being hurt.

“My officers are working hard with our partners to tackle these types of incidents and prevent them from taking place.

“There is a specific police and partnership operation that tackles car cruisers at Lakeside. The local partnership and police make use of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) and partnership patrols.

“We have been working with local businesses at Lakeside to tackle this issue."
