A YOUNG person has been issued with "urgent" safety advice after being seen riding an e-scooter on the hard shoulder of the A12.

Essex Police officers were called to concerning reports of a person using an e-scooter to join the southbound carriageway of the A12 between Witham and Hatfied Peverel on Saturday.

Upon arrival the force quickly managed to locate the person before taking them to safety.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We received reports of a person riding an e-scooter which had joined the southbound A12 between Witham and Hatfield Peverel and was travelling on the hard shoulder shortly, before 2.45pm on Saturday November 25.

"Officers quickly located a young person and issued urgent safety advice. Officers also ensured he had safe and legal onward travel."

E-scooters which can be rented as part of Government-backed trials are allowed on public highways, but any other type of e-scooter is only currently permitted on private land.

In May, 2022 new laws on e-scooters were announced but in this year’s King’s Speech there was no mention of any new laws, meaning legislation has now been delayed.
