PETROL prices are on the rise again.

Having hit an annual low in July of 143.3p per litre for petrol and 145.6p per litre for diesel, prices have increased by about 10p per litre in the past four months.

The prices are nowhere near as high as they were in the summer of 2022 – when diesel was costing an average of 199p per litre at one stage – but the fact is, nobody wants to pay over the odds for the same product.

It may come as a frustration, then, that prices can vary so markedly from filling station to filling station.

Those who commute on the A12 towards Ipswich will often have to do a double take at the Capel St Mary filling station, run by Esso, which sells petrol for about 145p per litre.

Drive ten minutes down the road to Colchester, and you will find yourself paying 10p more per litre of petrol if you fill up on Ipswich Road.

That means paying an extra £4 every time you fill a 40-litre tank to the brim with the same product.

To add another anomaly to the equation, supermarkets do not top the table this week for the least expensive petrol in the borough of Colchester, though Asda leads the way when it comes to affordable diesel.

Here is a run-down of what the pricings are looking like over the next few days or so.
