Traffic in Colchester can be very busy, but have you ever imagined what some of the busiest streets would look like without cars?
A new AI from the Netherlands creates images of how roads would look like if there were no cars.
The artificial intelligence from Dutch Cycling Lifestyle uses the location of a road anywhere in the world, scans the Google street-view and alters the image from busy roads to a carless future populated by pedestrians, cyclists and plants.
Here are ten spots in Colchester, re-designed for pedestrians and cyclists.
St Botolph’s Street
In this example, the AI removed all the cars and swapped the one-way road with a broad area for walking and cycling. The area has received a lot of green in the form of plants at the side of the walkway, creating a very idyllic and harmonious environment.
St John’s Street
The Dutch AI tool removed all vehicles like buses and motorcycles from the original image and replaced the concrete street with a paving stone street and a lot of plants and palm trees set up left and right to the pedestrian area.
Head Street
This part of Colchester was ridded of the queueing cars, which have been replaced by a generously sized area for pedestrians and cyclists and filled with plants.
North Hill
What is currently a busy road used by busses, cars and motorcycles has been turned into a broad pedestrian area with the Dutch AI.
The concrete surface has been replaced with cobblestone, adding many pedestrians and making the place come to life.
East Hill
East Hill is a very frequently used road in Colchester, with parking bays on one of the sides. In the future proposed by the artificial intelligence removed the road’s surface to make way for a garden-like area and upward winding gravel path.
Crouch Street
This part of Colchester is a one-way street near the city centre, but the Dutch AI has turned the grey stone and concrete surface into a colourful pedestrian area with a lot of greenery.
North Station Road
This road’s concrete surface has been replaced with cobblestone pavement and populated the area with a lot of pedestrians.
It also added a few more shops and removed the traffic sign as well.
Cowdray Avenue
Instead of the two-lane street near the Leisure Centre, the AI created cycling lanes and a wide range of green and wildflowers.
Lexden Road
The Dutch AI has removed all cars from the image and replaced the road with a wide path for people to walk and cycle, next to some idyllic greenery.
High Street
Colchester’s High Street is usually busy with busses and delivery drivers, but in the AI-created future, it is full of green hedges, seating areas and a straight path to walk down towards Castle Park.
