Drivers face congestion to almost junction 24 Kelvedon North queueing on the approach, and the road through Marks Tey and Stanway.
Buses are also diverting due to the closure.
A First Bus spokesman tweeted: "Due to the A12 closure of Marks Tey junction, 371 and X71, services towards Colchester between 9am and 7pm are diverting via Kelvedon and Tiptree.
"We apologise for this but we are hoping to try to keep the buses as close to a time table as possible"
