Residents are being invited to give their feedback on a new eight-kilometre walking and cycling route from the Severalls Lane and Mill Road roundabout to Avon Way at the Greenstead roundabout junction.
Essex County Council has been awarded funding to make walking and cycling route improvements in Colchester.
The council has begun designing a route and is asking for the public's opinions before final decisions are made.
The council has said further designs will be shown in early 2024 and the public will be given the opportunity to have their say on these proposals too.
Greenstead ward councillor Tim Young said: “The walking and cycling routes between Severalls and Greenstead are not really good at the moment. We do need to improve this and any work that improves walking and cycling is welcomed.
“We need extra cycle routes and more people will be cycling because of the Pedal Power initiative. The scheme was successful in Jaywick and nearly 100 bikes have been given to people in Greenstead through the scheme.
“We need to encourage cycling, walking and more sustainable modes of travel.
“I’m very pleased this is being considered.
“We can’t force people out of cars, but we can encourage people to use more sustainable modes of transport."
Mr Young added: “The scheme will make walking and cycling between these areas much safer.
“The more we can connect communities in Colchester to walk and cycle, the better.
“We can’t carry on with the way things are with climate change.”
A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “We want to hear residents’ views before schemes are developed. This means residents can help shape what something might look like, if it was to be built.
“Residents can feedback via an online survey. There will also in-person events at Greenstead Community Centre on Thursday, November 2 from 1pm to 6pm and at the Crescent, Colchester Business Park, from 11am to 2pm on the same day.
“If the designs develop into a credible route, the council will still need to conduct a full public consultation and apply for funding to build the route.”
