Venues in Colchester have received a national award for their standards and services in customer welfare.

Twelve night-time venues in the city centre received the Best Bar None accreditation at an event hosted by the Colchester Business Improvement District at the Three Wise Monkeys.

The award is a national scheme which helps customers to identify well-run pubs, bars, clubs and other businesses which serve alcohol.

Businesses on the scheme are assessed based on venue management, staff training, customer welfare and safety.

The twelve venues in Colchester are The Bull, Slug & Lettuce, Centurion, Purple Dog, Twisters, Yates, The Marquis, Three Wise Monkeys, Other Monkey Brewing, the Mercury Theatre, After Office Hours and Walkabout.

On top of the accreditation, the celebration saw trophies presented to businesses and individuals which were selected by an independent judging panel.

The leisure recovery highly commended award was given to the Purple Dog, while a special recognition award for the safety and welfare of others was awarded to Stacey Banner of the SOS bus, which provides a safe haven for any vulnerable person and those at risk.

Three Wise Monkeys was crowned winner of the Best Bar None awards, with runner-up the Mercury Theatre.

Vincent Geaves, Colchester coordinator for Best Bar None and business crime liaison officer for Our Colchester BID said: "It was a pleasure to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the nighttime economy businesses at the Best Bar None Awards.

"A huge congratulations to the winners, and all who have achieved accreditation.”
