A new pilot project promises to boost Colchester’s mobile connectivity with small-cell technology.

Essex County Council has announced a new project to help boost the 4G connectivity in the city.

The council will work together with the infrastructure provider Freshwave, which will install small cell technology on lampposts on behalf of a mobile network operator.

Small cells are ideal for enhancing mobile coverage in urban areas and align with the council's key priority and digital strategy to improve mobile coverage by 2025.

Part of the strategy is to allow networks to use public buildings, assets and land.

Lee Scott, Essex County Council cabinet member for planning a growing economy, said: “We are proud to trial this initiative in Essex, setting the stage for enhanced connectivity in our communities.

“This fantastic collaboration between Essex County Council, Essex Highways and Freshwave will support our aims for Levelling Up Essex by giving our residents and businesses the tools they need to thrive.

“Digital connectivity is essential to achieving a prosperous and equitable Essex and this project is a significant stride towards achieving that vision.”

According to County Hall it will strengthen Colchester’s role as a hub for tech and creative industries and provide growth and job opportunities.
