BUSINESSES in the city centre enjoyed an uplift in trade thanks to Colchester first ever soapbox rally, which organisers have promised will take place again next year.

The event, which took place for the first time on September 17, drew thousands of people to the High Street to watch more than 50 karts take place in the time trials.

Next year, it will take place on Sunday, September 15.

Figures released by Colchester’s Business Improvement District (BID) suggest the soapbox rally resulted in a 36.5 per cent uplift for businesses year-on-year.

Traders also recorded increased revenue and new customer types.

The event impressed so much, the BID has now confirmed it will return to the city next summer and continue to evolve.

BID chief executive, Sam Good, said: “It was amazing to see the high-street packed out in its thousands for the rally alongside our large screens around the city centre too.

“There was such a great atmosphere on the day, and it is events like this which see a real, tangible benefit to businesses.

“We are also excited to confirm the date for a return of the event in 2024.

“We have been listening to feedback from entrants and the public and are working on the evolution of the event for next year.”
