THE opening of Colchester’s newest Sainsbury’s store is drawing closer.

Construction work started on the supermarket giant’s fourth store in the city earlier this year.

Sainsbury’s is yet to confirm an exact opening date but it is expected the store, in Whitmore Drive, Mile End, will open by the end of this year.

Significant progress has been made on site, which was previously eyed up by the Co-op, with the retailer’s branding beginning to appear.

The firm’s slogan can be seen on windows at the front and back of the building.

Bosses have now approached Colchester Council’s planning department to seek permission to install the store’s signage.

A free-to-use cash machine is expected to be installed at the front of the shop and the retailer will provide 11 parking spaces, with free parking for 30 minutes.

It will sit next to a new Bright Horizons nursery which is also under construction and is expected to open early next year.

The nursery will be on the corner of Whitmore Drive and Eden Drive, with the Sainsbury’s store behind it on the corner of Via Urbis Romanae.

More than three years have passed since Colchester Council gave the green light for work to start.
