A MAN who endured months of "completely unnecessary" severe pain after dental work has been handed thousands of pounds in an out of court settlement.

The £12,500 payout was received by Mazin Karkotli, a former patient at Mile End Dental Clinic, in Nayland Road, Colchester.

Mr Karkotli says he received treatment at the practice in 2019 after complaining of broken teeth and he later received a filling with no local anaesthetic.

But that wasn’t the end of the 34-year-old’s problems and he returned to see his dentist who provided root canal treatment to another tooth to deal with persistent pain.

'I felt cheated'

“As the months went on I was still experiencing a lot of pain in my mouth and my teeth had become really sensitive,” he said.

“I was wary that some of the treatment I’d received had felt quite rough, and I hadn’t been given any painkillers or anaesthetic in the process.”

He visited a different practice for several emergency appointments in 2020 because of the pain he was experiencing and claims his new dentist told him the fillings he’d been given were insufficient and that he needed further root canal treatment.

“I felt cheated that I was essentially having to repeat treatments I’d had previously incurring double the cost,” he said.

The Ipswich resident said he couldn’t eat in the affected areas of his mouth for months, was regularly taking painkillers, and was suffering from disrupted sleep.

Suffering was 'completely unnecessary'

After approaching a solicitor, Mr Karkotli learned of several errors in his diagnosis and treatment, meaning his pain and suffering could’ve been avoided.

Rebecca McVety, of the Dental Law Partnership, the firm which secured the huge out-of-court settlement, said Mr Karkotli’s distress and pain were “completely unnecessary”.

The IT architect added: “It’s taken until the start of this year - over three years from when my issues with these teeth began - for the crowns to be finished and my teeth to be back in a good state.”

Mile End Dental Clinic confirmed the dentist who treated Mr Karkotli is no longer employed at the practice.

A spokesman declined to comment regarding the case specifically.
