A digger has struck a bridge on the A12, leaving the northbound road blocked.
The vehicle collided with the Birchwood Road bridge between the J29 and J30 near the Langha Shell Services at around 5 pm this afternoon.
The surface of the road is covered with debris and according to Essex Travel News, the bridge needs assessment after the incident.
A structural engineer is not due to attend until 8 pm and travellers expect long delays.
