THERE'S nothing quite like letting out some pent-up aggression in a safe and controlled environment - in fact, doing so makes for quite a therapeutic experience.

And Urban Extreme, in Colchester, is the perfect place to do just that.

Opened in April last year by Colchester residents Simon Farmer, Rob Clark and Scott Hinchcliffe, Urban Xtreme offers a rage room, axe throwing, arcade games, and tasty treats in its café.

Upon visiting the venue, discreetly tucked away under Temple Bridge, I was instantly impressed by how the space has been transformed into an exciting and fun activity site.

I'd headed to Urban Xtreme to specifically test out the rage room, which opened in July this year.

Upon arrival I had to sign a waiver form before being talked through what would happen during my 30-minute booking.

After suiting up in a jumpsuit and putting on a pair of safety gloves, I then made my way to the store area to select the items I wanted to destroy.

Once you purchase a rage room experience at the price of £30 per person, you are given £10 worth of credit which can be used purchase additional items to smash up.

The rage room store is made up of unwanted and broken items - which would normally cost to dispose of - which have been sourced from  local organisations, such as St Helena Hospice.

Items start at £3 but can increase to £15 or more. If you go over your budget, like I did, then you can simply pay for anything extra at the end.

Despite the additional cost, I was thrilled with my collection of dinner plates, a HD TV, PC monitor, a toaster and a Ipad.

I next had to pick which songs I would like played during my smashing session - somewhat amusingly it turns out the most popular songs to induce a rage-filled frenzy are Limp Bizkit’s Break Stuff and Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In the Name Of.

The iconic songs are the two most requested tracks from customers, although songs from Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, and even the odd Christmas song are also popular choices when it comes to helping customers get in the mood to obliterate objects.

After adorning my protective mask and a quick health and safety speech, I was finally able to start breaking and shattering the my selected items.

There was an array of weapons on display to use and once you get stuck in it’s the most primal and fun experience you could ask for. I would implore anyone to let their hair down and have a go.

It really was like a form of therapy.

As well as providing endless fun to residents in Colchester, Urban Xtreme’s co-founders are also keen to do good for the community.

They are currently looking to open a second space in the near future called Urban Support, a fully kitted out area for their current after school club for kids, as well as helping support children with ADHD and young carers.

Speaking about why they love the business, Simon said: “We enjoy everything we do.”

Rob added: “We like helping people. We like seeing the benefit of what we do.”
