COLCHESTER'S first-ever Soapbox Rally zoomed through the city centre as thousands of spectators enjoyed what was a fun-filled afternoon.

The enthralling and exciting event, which was free to watch, got underway on Sunday morning before concluding with the final race later in the afternoon.

Throughout the day an array of incredibly decorated soapbox karts entertained the crowds as they zipped down the High Street before crossing the finish line near Long Wyre Street.

After launching from an 8ft high ramp, the vehicles raced down the 300-metre long track through the “Kart-wash”, where a foam shower awaited them.

The gathered crowds cheered the racers on while also participating in the event by squirting water guns, which the younger spectators particularly enjoyed.

Speaking from the side of the track, soapbox fans Catherine and Chris said: “It is brilliant from what we can see, we can't really see a lot, but yeah, we see the finish line and it's quite exciting.

“They should definitely do more events like this in Colchester.”

One of the more than 50 karts to take part in the race was a vehicle manned by members of the Rotary Club of Colchester Forum.

He used his knowledge to design the forum’s Jumbo Jet soapbox which was constructed by East Mersea engineer Duncan Pittock.

President of the Rotary Club of Colchester Forum, Colin Bennett, said: “This is a tremendous event for our city and we were thrilled to support it.”

The winning team for fastest was ADP Classic Racing, while Team Tavern won the most creative.
