AN independent coffeehouse chain has opened a new café in Colchester after a year of hard work.

Toast has officially arrived in the city centre, replacing the former Costa in Culver Square.

The newest branch opened over the weekend after plans for the new site were first revealed earlier this year.

Following a launch party on Saturday, the business enjoyed a hugely successful opening day on Sunday with customers flocking from across the city.

A spokesman for Toast said: “Thank you, Colchester. You’re amazing.

“We officially opened the doors to our new coffee house in Culver Square and were greeted by a very warm welcome. It was like a huge hug.

“Thank you to everyone who stopped by to support us and welcome us to this wonderful city. We're overwhelmed by your support and kindness.

“Toast Colchester has been 12 months in the making and it’s been a team effort to make it happen."

The latest branch is the fifth Toast, with stores already in operation in Chelmsford, Sudbury and Witham.

The first café opened in Braintree in February 2020 and was started by pals Louis McNamee, Daniel Pearson and Robert Ely.

Toast has been a hit since it opened three years ago and has expanded its empire along the A12 corridor.

It typically serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, milkshakes, toasties and sandwiches.

Speaking to the Gazette previously, Mr Ely said he was “really excited” to finally open in Colchester.

Toast bosses have now thanked the city for its support and all those involved in the opening.

The spokesman added: “Thank you to the Toast team who have worked tirelessly to make the impossible possible - you’re amazing.

“Thank you to our suppliers and supporters for their help behind the scenes, and their remarkable talent of performing miracles.

“Finally, a sincere thank you from the bottom of our heart to every customer who has ever stepped through the door at any TOAST.

“Your support enables us to keep doing what we’re doing, and makes moments like this one, possible.

“Without you, we wouldn't exist.

“With your support, we keep toasting, bringing joy and making the world a little bit better through the extraordinary power of a great-tasting cup of coffee.”
