SHOPPERS have described the forthcoming closure of Wilko stores in Colchester and Clacton as “another nail in the coffin” of the High Street.

Administrators PwC announced on Monday more than 400 Wilko stores would close and 12,500 jobs potentially lost.

The news of the mass exodus came after a rescue deal spearheaded by HMV owner Doug Putman - who looked set to take on 300 stores - reportedly collapsed.

As a result, Wilko stores in Colchester and Clacton now face closure despite the Gazette previously being led to believe the Colchester branch would be saved.

Colchester and Clacton shoppers have now shared their disappointment following the latest development.

George Sparkes was one of the many customers of Wilko to react to the news, stating how the closure of the store will be an important loss for the community.

He said: “Another nail in the coffin for Clacton. Like Colchester, [the High Street] is slowly dying. I feel so sorry for the staff. They are so lovely and polite.”

Resident Bee Salmon, meanwhile, has also been left upset following the news of the impending closures.

“[I visited Wilko] three months back before this was all announced and there were so many empty shelves [and they were] out of stock of things," she said.

"It crossed my mind perhaps they couldn’t pay their suppliers and now it’s come to this. Very sad.”

Many other saddened shoppers stated the loss of Wilko is a great "shame" and a "sad" moment for the retail industry, while others feared the closures could result in workers losing their pensioners.

Denise Stevens said: "So sad. I really feel for the staff and the 'so-called' city - another shop gone.

"Please, something needs to be done. I have grown up in Colchester and used to love coming shopping but not anymore."

Clacton shopper Newley Adalene, meanwhile, wished Wilko workers in the seaside town well ahead of looming job losses.

She added: "Good luck to the Clacton staff [who are] hanging in limbo.

"[They are so loyal staying until the end. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter."

Wilko in Clacton will be closing on September 21 and Colchester's closing date is yet to be announced.
