A SECOND shopper has come forward to complain about a “lack of open checkouts” at Stanway’s Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Wheelchair user David Hursey, 82, said the shop’s move to open more self-service checkouts and use less people-operated tills has left him stranded.

The pensioner said during his last trip to the supermarket in August he had to join a queue of about 25 people all waiting to be served.

“It was so sunny that day it was unbearable to be stood there,” said Mr Hursey, who lives in Marks Tey.

The shopper claimed he asked the Sainsbury’s staff to open extra checkouts but was told this wouldn’t be happening.

“The store was full up, it was absolute chaos. Some people just left their trollies as they couldn’t be bother to wait in the end,” he added.

Speaking last week about the issue to the Gazette, a Sainsbury’s spokesman confirmed the number of self-service checkouts has been increased in recent weeks “to meet customer demand”.

“Our colleagues are on hand to help anyone who may need support and we continue to offer manned checkouts for our customers who wish to use them,” she added.
