A POPULAR sci-fi and superhero event is returning to Colchester city centre today.

Invasion Colchester will be marking its eleventh anniversary as it runs from 10am to 4pm in Culver Square.

Famous characters from Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Doctor Who and more will be seen roaming the city throughout the day.

There will also be live performances from talented musicians and a dress-up competition for youngsters who have had a go themselves.

Last year’s event raised a whopping £14,524 which was shared between St Helena Hospice, Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity and Mind Mid and North East Essex.

Organisers say this year’s occasion will be bigger and better than ever before.

Other characters on display include those from Jurassic Park, Predators, Game of Thrones and Disney princesses, as well as all the most iconic comic book and movie superheroes.

There will even be show cars featured from well known films and TV shows.

Anyone visiting Invasion Colchester in costumer or fancy dress will be allowed to travel on the city’s park and ride, in Cuckoo Farm Way, for free.

The fancy dress costume competitions will begin in Culver Square from 11am, with live music performances kicking off from noon.
