A BUS veered off a Colchester roundabout after the driver “became unwell”, it has been revealed.

Paramedics were called to a roundabout off Gavin Way just after 5pm on Monday following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

After arriving at the scene, frontline workers found a bus which had mounted the pavement.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at with reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a bus on Gavin Way in Colchester.

“An ambulance and ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene.

“The driver of the bus was transported to Colchester General Hospital for further assessment and treatment, while the passengers of the bus were uninjured.”

Now, The Gazette has been told the incident occurred after the driver became unwell.

A spokesperson for First Essex said: “On Monday afternoon, as one of our buses approached a traffic roundabout, our driver became unwell which resulted in the bus stopping on the grass verge on the opposite side of the roundabout.

“As the bus was travelling slowly, thankfully no injuries were sustained to anyone travelling on the bus or to any other road users in the vicinity at the time”.
