A BUS driver was taken to hospital after their vehicle mounted the kerb before crashing near a Colchester school.
Paramedics were called to a roundabout off Gavin Way just after 5pm on Monday following reports of a single-vehicle crash.
After arriving at the scene, frontline workers found a bus which appeared to have crashed before mounting the pavement.
A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service added: “The driver of the bus was transported to Colchester Hospital for further assessment and treatment, while the passengers of the bus were uninjured.”
Essex county councillor for Highwoods and Mile End David King said: “I wasn’t aware of the incident actually when it happened.
“But I am sad to hear of any accidents like this and there was no doubt shock for all those involved.
“It must have been quite a fright and the risk of injury would’ve been a concern.
“It is however good news no one was seriously injured.”
Some have expressed concern over the location being too narrow for buses.
One Gazette reader said: “Buses need extra room at the roundabout. Cars don’t allow them extra room."
However, Mr King said he has not seen anything like this previously and stressed any safety concerns will be addressed if necessary.
He said: “I don’t think there is anything about the location to suggest any other cause and we will have to wait and see the outcome of any investigations.
“I am not aware of any other incidents of this kind, and we will monitor the reports with Essex Highways and take action if necessary.
“If any accident review shows evidence which requires intervening by highways, we will press for it with a priority, given the importance both the local council and highways place on public safety.”
