TENNIS courts in Colchester have finally reopened to the public after pricey renovations were completed.

Leisure World Tennis Centre is back in action following a £35,000 revamp, which was funded by the Government and LTA Tennis Foundation.

The new courts will now host local tennis leagues, giving people the opportunity to get involved in friendly and social competitions.

To ensure their long-term viability, the courts have undergone extensive work including new painting, new secure fencing and a new gate system linked to the LTA's online booking platform.

The LTA and Colchester Council will also work together to set up new free park tennis sessions providing regular opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and play.

Courts can be hired for £10.45 for adults and £8.45 for juniors.

Alternatively, you can join as an annual tennis member for £45 for adults and £35 for junior with no additional fees to book courts.

The small fees will ensure the courts are maintained at their new high standard for years to come.

Councillor Michelle Burrows, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “The tennis courts look great, and it’s fantastic that they are now back open for residents to enjoy.

"We are incredibly grateful to the LTA and funding from the UK Government in helping us improve these facilities and make them more accessible to our community.

"I’d encourage everyone to pick up a racket and go and take a look.”

The works took place as part of the biggest ever investment in parks and tennis facilities across Britain, with millions of pounds being set aside to transform more than 2,000 courts.

Julie Porter, chief operating officer at the LTA, added: “After months of hard work, we’re delighted to see park tennis courts at Leisure World Tennis Centre officially back open to the public, and in better shape than ever.

“Public tennis courts are such vital facilities for getting active and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis.

"Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come.”

All courts are available to book via the new booking website at clubspark.lta.org.uk/LeisureWorldTennisCentre.
