A POPULAR pub has closed its doors for more than four days as it pushes on with building work.

The Princess Charlotte, in London Road, Stanway, Colchester, served its last pints on Sunday before it closed to make way for an extension.

The pub, which opened in 2018 to roaring success, is expected to re-open later this week.

Addressing pubgoers on social media, bosses wrote: “This is so the extension can be finalised and we can get everything ready for you all to see the hard work that’s gone into it.”

Work on the long-awaited extension, which was given the green light in February last year after an application to Colchester Council in 2021, started in April.

The pub has remained open throughout the project, which will increase the total floorspace with an extension at the back of the building, except for the brief closure this week.

The extension will increase the internal floorspace by 56 sq m with no detriment to the pub’s existing car parking facilities.

The planning application said: “The proposed extension will provide a sensitively designed, high quality addition to the rear of the application site building.”

The pub’s re-opening is set for 3pm on Friday.
