MORE than 1,000 cannabis plants have been discovered inside a building in Harwich after police received reports of a "strong smell".

Essex Police were alerted to suspicious activity and a potent odour emanating from a disused building in Fronks Road, Harwich, on Thursday.

Upon entering the premises, the officers stumbled upon a sprawling indoor cannabis plantation made-up of more than 1000 mature plants.

A spokesman from Essex Police said: "We received information regarding a strong smell and suspicious activity around a disused building.

"Officers from E shift, Harwich Local Policing Team, attended the scene and upon attendance, they discovered in excess of 1,000 cannabis plants inside the property."

Officers from the Tendring Community Policing Team currently remain at the scene.

The force will presumably continue to be stationed at the site until all plants are recovered and the operation is dismantled.
