Councillor Mark Goacher, from Castle Ward, said: "I'm very sorry to hear this.

"Women's safety is a priority and we will try to deal with this.

"Women should be able to walk around without these things happening. It's a real issue and although I'm not sure of the circumstances, it's simply not acceptable."

Officers continue to appeal for witnesses and footage that could help their investigation.

Richard Kirby-Taylor, from Colchester Castle Ward, said: "It's absolutely horrific that this has happened.

"Anyone who knows anything about this crime should come forward and help the police with the investigation.

"It's disgusting to think that these crimes are still happening in our day and age - it's unacceptable.

"We need to look at the underlying causes of why this is happening as just catching this one person will not change that this might still happen.

"We need to look at why some people think that they can do such horrific crimes."
