CHILDREN are finally able to use the playground on a housing estate… 13 years after it was built.

The facility in Cavalry Road, Colchester, remained incomplete for more than a decade after developer Vistry Homes became concerned the soil was contaminated.

The section of the Quadriga site, near Abbey Field, became an eyesore after it was fenced off and left to lie abandoned.

But equipment was finally installed after the soil was removed and replaced last year and the fencing has now finally been taken away.

Cavalry Road resident Chris Piggott said he is “delighted” his daughter is now able to use the playground.

“I was told it should be ready by the end of April, so when that date passed I started to wonder if it would ever open,” said the resident.

“We live on the estate just a short stone’s throw away and our daughter has been desperate to use it, so to see her being one of the first to use it was lovely.

“A special thank you must go to the late Nick Cope for all of his efforts and work to try and get this open during his time as a local councillor.

“The playground was full of happy children yesterday afternoon and his work helped make that happen.”

The news has been welcomed by New Town and Christ Church councillor Pam Cox who said she had worked with Vistry Homes and council officers to get the project over the line.

“It has come a bit late for my own children who’ve grown up and gone to university while the playground was fenced off but I hope that all the families in the Quadriga development will be delighted with the new play area,” she said.

“There had been a few final delays waiting for overhanging tree branches to be cut back but now everything is ready for action.

“It is great that this will be available for residents during the summer holidays.”
