The fate of Colchester's main nightclub may have been saved just days before it's due to close its doors forever.

The bosses of ATIK, in High Street, announced the popular club's permanent closure last month.

"Challenging" trading conditions, including struggles to attract 18- and 19-year-old partygoers, were cited as one of the reasons for the axing of the venue, which is due to close on Saturday.

But it might not be the end of the road for the nightclub, which has confirmed this weekend will no longer be its last hurrah.

In a statement, a spokesperson from ATIK Colchester said: “Our main priority is to keep ATIK Colchester open for our guests and staff.

"Following last-minute talks with the landlord, we may have found a way to keep the venue open.

"As a result, we will not be closing this weekend and will be operating as usual.

"We hope to confirm the future of the site within a couple of weeks.”

The venue had organised to host two special events for its closing weekend.

A “Hippodrome Reunion Party” on Friday with “the best resident DJs from 1988-2008 Hippodrome days for a night of pure nostalgia”, followed by ATIK’s final send-off event on Saturday.

The statement added: “All tickets purchased for this weekend are still valid as we celebrate this iconic venue’s history. However, if you would like a refund, please just get in touch.”
