A THIEF who stole a motorbike from a popular boating venue before ramming a police car is being hunted by officers.

The police car sustained damage to its open car door after officers had stopped to speak with the male suspect on the Colchester-bound A133.

It is reported a black Honda motorcycle had been taken from outside Dedham Boathouse in Mill Lane, Dedham.

The vehicle was then spotted being driven on the busy route last Thursday and stopped by the police.

Dedham Boathouse becomes increasingly popular during the summer where people can rent a boat to paddle along the River Stour.

It was turned into a tearoom after more than 70 years as a boathouse used for rowing and sailing boats.

Rural North councillor Darius laws moved to reassure residents that theft is an “isolated and rare occurrence in the glorious village of Dedham.”

He added: “If anyone saw anything or has information please get in contact with Essex Police, whose officers, I am sure, are finding out everything they need to bring this person to justice.”

Mr Laws said he hopes people visiting Dedham this summer will do so “with respect for the residents and the beauty spot that it is.”
