Colchester's Darcy's sweet shop to be reopened under new ownership

Darcy’s Traditional Sweet Shoppe in Eld Lane has been temporarily closed down after owner Jamie Milleare made the decision to sell the business.

Jamie has said “business has never been so good” but he has decided to take some time to travel and think about his next steps in life.

His stepsister Carly, however, is now set to take over the business, with the aim of reopening the shop at the weekend.

Mr Milleare said: “I started Darcy’s back early in 2012 and over the years I have built up my store to what it is today.

“Parents came in with their toddlers who are now teenagers and I have watched families grow over the years.

“I can honestly say I’m proud of what I have achieved with the brand I created and the bubble T bar I have incorporated within our four walls.

“Business has never been so good and it’s more than thriving but Covid taught me a big lesson.

“As some of you are aware, especially the friends I hold close, it takes a toll on an individual, it’s made me realise I have done all I can with my store and it’s time for me to say goodbye.

“I’m taking time out and I’m going travelling, during that time I will contemplate what next venture I wish to choose moving forward with my life." 

The traditional shop is set to continue selling the same stock and little changes are expected to be made to the business. 

He added: “I have sold the store to Carly my stepsister who will now run it as I have, so don’t be alarmed, everything will continue as it has and everything will be available as normal.

“As you can understand there are legals to finalise for the takeover so as of 5pm today May 22 the store will be closed and hopefully open the weekend under her management.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to just say thank you very much for your support, and I appreciate it greatly, I’m going to miss you all.”
