ONE of Colchester’s former leading politicians has had a road named in her honour.

The first residents have moved into Joyce Brooks Close, which is part of a new housing development at the junction of Butt Road and Circular Road West, Colchester.

Joyce Brooks, who was the mayor of Colchester in 1976-77, was first elected to Colchester Council in May 1965, representing St Mary’s – which is now part of the New Town and Christ Church ward.

Retiring from the council after 25 years, she was made an honorary alderman.

The new development is in the area she represented, and this is not the first time Mrs Brooks has been honoured in this way, with her name previously being associated with a sheltered housing scheme in the city.

She also played a vital role in setting up St Helena Hospice after identifying a need for a hospice in the area.

In 1990, shortly after receiving her alderman status, the former mayor and her husband Bill emigrated to Perth, Australia. She died in 2016 aged 89 after a six year battle with cancer.
