WITH the summer half-term just around the corner, we thought it would be a good time to share our top picks for family-friendly events taking place in and around Colchester during the school holidays.

Thankfully, families are spoilt for choice, with plenty of fun and engaging events to choose from.

Here are our top picks for half-term events!

On Sunday, May 28, at the East Anglian Railway Museum, youngsters will be able to feast their eyes on over 150 transport-themed exhibits, from vintage motorbikes, military vehicles, kit cars and modern head turners.

Visitors will also have the chance to have unlimited rides all day long on the museum’s passenger and freight trains.

On Monday, May 29, families can enjoy an afternoon of fun at Abberton Reservoir’s family fun day.

The event will give youngsters the chance to explore different habitats and make treats along the way.

Visitors can also have a go at pond dipping, go bug hunting and toast a marshmallow over a fire and help mix up a seed bomb to grow wildflowers.

On Monday, 29, Layer Marney will host its village fete, including fun game stalls, a novelty dog show, and plenty of homegrown produce and handcrafted goods.

Running on Tuesday, May 30 visitors can enjoy an I-Spy nature trail at Markshall Estate.

Pick up your copy of the itinerary from the visitor centre and make your way around the estate, discovering some of Markshall’s best sights.

Visitors have the option of a trail of 20 nature highlights, or for those with little legs, an 8-site long trail is also available.

Both trails enable youngsters to have a go on the natural play areas and feed the monster carp in the lakes.

On Wednesday, May 31, Abberton Reservoir will also host a drop-off day for over 5s, where children can socialise, climb trees, make crafts and build dens.

On Thursday, June 1, Rollerworld will host its Northern Skateway event at the Northern Gateway, offering a fun and vibrant space for families to skate.

On Friday, June 2, Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park is holding a drop-off day for over 5s, giving children a chance to make crafts, climb trees and build dens for a day of fun.

On the afternoon of Friday, June 2, families can enjoy a beach bazaar in Earl’s Colne.

Live music performances will be the backdrop for an afternoon of classes and workshops for families to enjoy.
