A MERSEA islander who came up short at the local elections has thanked those who supported his bid.
Independent candidate for Mersea and Pyefleet John Akker secured 994 votes but placed second behind Conservative Carl Powling.
Reacting to the result, Mr Akker said: “I am disappointed to have not won the election but believe virtually 1,000 votes for an Independent is a very significant vote.
“I got more than last time and am pleased that others standing have adopted my policies.
“Now I would like to thank those that supported me and many that worked for me."
