Colchester’s iconic skating brand has revealed it will return for a summer of outdoor skating at a new venue.

Rollerworld, which shut its Moorside site in November, will run the new weekly sessions at the Northern Gateway sports park.

The events, which have been called “Northern Skateway” will begin on Thursday and are intended to be informal gatherings for skating enthusiasts.

Participants aged 14 or under must be accompanied by an adult.

Anne and Jason Khan, who co-owns Rollerworld, made the announcement to delighted fans.

In a statement they said: “Rollerworld’s Northern Skateway is here to help fill that void and create new memories.

“The incredible skating floor is perfect for both beginners and advanced skaters alike.

"Whether you are looking to work on your skills or just want to have fun, Rollerworld’s Northern Skateway has got you covered.

“We will be playing great music to keep you moving and grooving all night long, and our Thursday evening sessions will run throughout the summer, creating new memories that will last a lifetime.”

The news of the revival comes after Anne and Jason closed down their famous skating rink after 32 years following a bitter rent dispute.

Landlord Petchey Holdings is reported to have wanted to increase the rent on the building from £100,000 per year to £250,000.

Bosses at the company previously told the Gazette they considered the terms for the new lease to be “below the market rate.”

Despite the setback, the couple vowed to keep the brand alive and continue to search for a permanent home.

Last month Rollerworld held a special skating event at Charter Hall.

Among those in attendance were Colchester mayor Tim Young, High Steward Sir Bob Russell and Rollerworld’s previous stewarding staff.

Anne said: “It was much more successful than we thought and we got nothing but positive comments.

“It was a really, really great day and the support we had was amazing – it took weeks of planning but everyone worked tirelessly and it was so worthwhile.

“It felt like coming home and it has given us a boost to keep pushing forward.”
