A SCHOOL is introducing a new “landmark development” to make changes to its decades-old layout.
Copford CofE Primary School has announced the opening of its new Key Stage 2 building.
It replaces four demountable buildings which had been in place for more than 30 years.
The new block is state-of-the-art, carbon neutral and eco-friendly.
Guests present at the block’s official opening will include Witham MP Priti Patel and Clare Kershaw, Director of Education for Essex.
Also on hand will be Tony Ball, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Skills and Training.
The school had been hoping for such developments for many years with ideas first mooted in 2010.
At the time, staff taught groups of children in corridors and other areas due to a lack of space.
David Bome, headteacher, said in 2010: “I have a phenomenally-skilled group of learning assistants, but they have to work in the corridors at the moment.
“It’s not the right place for it, but we don’t have space to do all the things we need to do.
“The school is not big enough and it’s not in a good state.
“It’s been a problem for a long time.”
Ten years later, it was first reported that the school were seeking a more permanent teaching space.
Mr Bome said: ““At the moment we are working with Essex County Council and its schools organisation team to put together plans for a new build.
““It is positive for us and we have been working on things since before Christmas.
““It might not be ready after this summer holidays but I hope it will be complete next year.
“It will mean the whole of Key Stage Two can be in one building. It will make a huge difference to the school but we have to be patient.”
