WORK will take place to clear drains on a Colchester road which regularly floods each time it rains.

Three locations along Berechurch Hall Road have been known to flood.

It has lead to ward councillor Dave Harris to called on Essex Highways to take action.

Among the affected areas is the junction between William Harris Way and Lethe Grove.

Mr Harris said: “Flooding at [the junction] started again in the back end of last year.

Gazette:

“It had stopped for a short while when the cross drain and link to ditches had been cleared two years ago but due to lack of maintenance it had restarted.

“I nearly got splashed there over the weekend.”

He added a “good clear through” and a regular drain cleaning regime across all three sites was needed to resolve the issue.

A spokesperson for Essex Highways said: “During a recent inspection of William Harris Way, we identified a couple of flooding defects and are in the process of programming a visit from our jetting team to rectify the issue.

“We don’t currently have any flooding defects recorded for the other areas mentioned, but will arrange for an inspection to be carried out as soon we can.”

This is not the first time that Berechurch Hall Road has experienced flooding.

In August 2021, Dave told the Gazette that dodgy drains had caused large puddles to build up after rainfall.

People waiting at the Berechurch Hall Road and Mersea Road bus stops were splashed with water.

Much like now, poorly maintained drains were highlighted as the reason for continued flooding.

Earlier that year in January 2021, the area dealt with similar flooding problems.

At the time, the Environment Agency issued a flood warning for River Colne between Lexden and Halstead.
