WORK continues on the construction of Colchester’s newest supermarket.

Sainsbury’s will open its fourth store in the city later this year.

Building work started at the site, which is on the corner of Whitmore Drive and Via Urbis Romanae, Mile End, earlier this year.

New pictures reveal significant progress has already been made on the project, with the shell of the building now standing proud on the site.

The retailer already has a presence in Colchester – with superstores in Stanway and the city centre, and a convenience store in Layer Road.

Patrick Dunne, who is Sainsbury’s property director, said: “We’re delighted to be building a new Sainsbury’s Local for customers in Colchester, creating new jobs and representing a significant investment in the area.

“Recruitment for the new colleague team will take place later this year and we’ll keep the local community updated.”

Mr Dunne confirmed the supermarket giant will open its new store “before the end of the year” and it will be alongside a Bright Horizons nursery which will open in early 2024.

The shop, which will be at the heart of the Kingswood Heath development, was initially planned to be a Co-op store.
