A CAR sales giant has announced the closure of a popular showroom, less than two weeks after the closure of another of its dealerships.

Vauxhall has been represented by Underwoods in Colchester for more than 25 years but its showroom, in Autoway, Highwoods, will close at the end of this month.

The announcement of the closure comes just days after the closure of Underwoods’ Skoda franchise on March 31.

Gerry Wiggins, who is the managing director of Underwoods, emphasised the decision was out of the firm’s hands and added the closure is part of “changing times within the motor industry”.

“It is with great sadness we must confirm the closure of Vauxhall in Colchester,” said Mr Wiggins.

Underwoods acquired the Vauxhall franchise in 1998 with the purchase of the former Cowies Vauxhall dealership at Scotts Corner, in Ipswich Road.

The Underwoods boss continued: “The decision to close was not one of Underwoods making, as we have been successfully representing Vauxhall in Colchester for over 25 years.

“As I am sure you are aware these are changing times within the motor industry, including online sales.

“Vauxhall has decided to reduce the number of dealers in their network, with an increased focus towards online sales.”

Underwoods has, however, now committed to continue serving its loyal customers, albeit at different locations.

“We will continue to provide maintenance and warranty repairs to our customers at our authorised Vauxhall locations in Clacton, Sudbury and Tiptree,” explained Mr Wiggins.

“Customers will be contacted as usual when your vehicle is due to be serviced or an MOT is required.”

No jobs have been lost as a result of the closure, with Mr Wiggins confirming “our Vauxhall staff will have continued employment”.

Thanking his firm’s loyal customers, its managing director said: “We greatly value our customers and would like to thank all the Underwoods customers who have been so supportive over the years, returning time and time again for their next vehicle and servicing.”

Customers can book maintenance and warranty repairs in Sudbury by calling 01787 372301, in Clacton by calling 01255 222444, and in Tiptree by calling 01621 817781.

Vauxhall has been approached for comment.
