COLCHESTER United captain Tommy Smith achieved a landmark last night after earning his 50th cap for New Zealand.

But the experienced defender's evening was tarnished after he was sent off in the second half of the Kiwis' international friendly with China, which finished 0-0.

Smith was dismissed midway through the second half after fouling a Chinese attacker, when he was the last defender following a mix-up between the U's defender and goalkeeper Oli Sail.

New Zealand's game was the first of a two-match series against China, with a second friendly match between the two countries taking place in Wellington at the Sky Stadium, on Sunday.

Smith is now among New Zealand's top-20 appearance makers.

The 32-year-old defender is set to miss Colchester's home match against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, as a result of his international call-up.

Smith recently returned to the U's side for two matches against Northampton Town and Carlisle United but missed their games against Leyton Orient and Bradford City.

Smith has made more than 100 appearances for Colchester in his two spells with the club.
