COLCHESTER United boss Ben Garner is backing his players to overcome their 'mindset challenge' and get back on the scoring trail.

The U's head into their match at Leyton Orient this afternoon aiming to rediscover their goal touch, after a barren eight and a half hour without finding the net.

Garner insists there is enough quality in his squad to overcome their goal drought - and is encouraging his players to be confident in front of goal.

Garner said: “As a coaching staff, we’ve made it clear this week that we want that positivity.

“I’ve got no issue with a forward missing a chance with someone taking a shot from 25 yards, if they think that’s the right thing to do.

“I want that strong mentality where if you don’t score, you go for the next one.

“It’s now a little bit of a mindset challenge from us, as a group.

“A big part of my job I see is giving that confidence to the players and them knowing that they’ve got my trust and my backing on the pitch.

“We’ve not scored enough goals in recent games but there’s certainly the quality to do so and I’ve seen it over the last week or so now.

“We have forwards that can score goals, we can score off set-pieces, we’ve got different avenues to score goals.

“We’re trying to put a lot of belief and confidence into the players.

“I think you get that from work, on the training ground and also what we’re trying to say to them and do.

“But the ultimate confidence boost is the ball going in and winning games and that’s what we’ve got to try and do."

Jayden Fevrier is hoping to be involved again for Colchester today, having impressed as a substitute in their 1-0 home defeat to Stockport County, last weekend.

Garner says he has liked what he has seen from the former West Ham United youngster, since taking charge earlier this month.

“Jayden has impressed me," said Garner.

“He’s one that I didn’t know too much about before coming in.

“He came on against Northampton late on and that was the first time I’d seen him.

“He’s been with us every day in training and he came on last week.

“The shape we played last week probably doesn’t suit him as a player; I think he’s more suited to a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 but he’s got attributes I really like.

“His attitude is really good and he’s certainly one I could see featuring for us, moving forward."
