STOCKPORT County boss Dave Challinor praised his promotion-chasing side's 'big effort' after they returned to winning ways at Colchester United.

It was the Hatters' first win in four matches, after Kyle Wootton's first-half header sealed them victory at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Challinor said: “It’s a great result for us.

“Looking at the statistics, it was our first win in four, our sixth win in nine, however you want to look at it.

“It was a good performance on a tough pitch, a big pitch but very spongy and it took a real big effort to get those three points.

“In the first half, we had good situations where maybe when we did turn the ball, it got stuck under our feet or we made the wrong decision, in possession.

“We then managed to get ourselves in front and we dug in there and I think statistically, Ben (Hinchliffe) hasn’t made a save with them not having a shot on goal.

“But that’s a result of us throwing bodies in the way, blocks and all those types of things which you have to do, if you’re going to be successful.

“We had fantastic support and it was great to send our fans home happy.

"It's the first time I've been here and it's a great set-up."

Gazette:

Stockport lost central defender Fraser Horsfall to injury midway through the first half and Challinor revealed the defender hurt his ankle.

He said: "It's a twist which I'm not overly surprised if I'm honest, just in terms of how the pitch was.

"It's definitely an ankle-rolling pitch and unfortunately, we've got one of those.

"We'll just have to see how it settles and the thing with an ankle is the quicker you can get the swelling down, the quicker players return.

"We've got a week in terms of having no midweek fixture to try and get him back, so fingers crossed he'll be fine but at the moment, we're not too sure."

Gazette:

Stockport host fellow promotion hopefuls Mansfield Town next weekend and Challinor admits it is a big match.

He added: "They (Mansfield) are one of the teams with games in hand so they're playing catch up a little bit and on paper, it does look like a good game, a big game between in my opinion, two good teams.

"Maybe with their game not going ahead (against Leyton Orient) they've lost ground a little bit and that probably makes next week a little bit bigger.

"We'll look forward to it; it'll be a great occasion and lots on the line."
