A SUPER and sizeable cohort of incredible Colchester youngsters can now proudly call themselves award-winners after being celebrated by a charity.

Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards were presented to 84 young people from schools and colleges across the city during a ceremony at Charter Hall.

During the special occasion the students – aged between 11 and 25 – were commemorated for their contributions to their educational communities.

They also received medallions and framed certificates along with a £300 grant for them to spend on something which will benefit their school or youth group.

Ruby Cooper-Taylor, 19, who attends Colchester Institute, was celebrated for making more than 100 items of jewellery to give away on Random Acts of Kindness Day.

Mary Richardson, 17, meanwhile, who attends The Sixth Form College, scooped her award for her dedication to helping thousands of students embrace the arts.

She said: “I am very grateful to receive this award as I know it will help the Arts Community at college and get more students involved in the committee.”

Benito Del Bravo, 13, who attends St Helena School, was praised for his commitment to his school’s STEM Club and creating a Bluetooth-controlled information scroller.

He said: “I found the event very surreal but it was great to see so many other aspiring children whom I can heavily relate to.

“Receiving this award is very special to me as it is great to be appreciated for my achievements and I will always appreciate what the Foundation has done for me.”

Madeleine Strevens, 15, attends Colchester County High School For Girls and received her award for teaching younger students to develop sign language skills.

“I am grateful to receive the Jack Petchey Achievement Award,” Madeleine said.

“I taught myself sign language during lockdown and now taught my form basic sign language.”

As well as the youngsters, some glory was also afforded to six adults who were given Leader Awards for demonstrating outstanding ability to motivate young people.

Mayor of Colchester, Tim Young, added: “It was an inspiring event and a real honour and privilege to be part of. These young people are absolutely inspirational.”
