A STREET stall which has sold succulent sausages for more than three decades is set to give away 1,000 banging bangers to help get people into the city centre.

The Hot Sausage Company has had a presence in Colchester for an impressive 33 years having first pitched up on the area’s cobbled streets back in 1990.

Since doing so the business has gone from strength to strength and is now a staple of the community and heralded as one of the best independent eateries in the area.

The super sausage stand is now preparing to serve-up 1,000 free large hot dogs to Colchester shoppers, residents and workers from 10am on March 23.

Andrew Bavington-Barber, owner of The Hot Sausage Company, said: “We did this before for our 25th anniversary in Colchester and we really wanted to do it again.

“We will need a full compliment of staff to cope with all the queues but we will be fast and efficient so put the date in your diary and don’t forget.

“Anyone can come along and get a free sausage and if people want to queue up multiple times they will get given multiple sausages.

“But once they’re gone, they’re gone.”

As well as simply just wanting to display generosity, Andrew also hopes the sausage giveaway will encourage more people into the city centre and change perceptions.

He added: “A lot of negative things get said about Colchester city centre but we really do not think it is that bad at all.

“So, we are doing this because we want to counter the narrative and we want to do something positive for the town.

“There are still lots of businesses which are operating successfully and not everything has closed down.

“We have seen a few changes over the years but it is still a great place to shop and we still love doing it. Hopefully we will not be going anywhere over the next 33 years.”
