A DRAG entertainer and artist has called for a deserted and derelict cinema to be transformed into a “beautiful” creative hub for the LGBTQ+ community.

Sirena Hart, who stages shows and exhibitions throughout East Anglia, wants to see Colchester’s old Odeon turned into a drag bar and workshop centre.

The long-abandoned building has been out-of-action for more than 20 years and is now considered an eyesore which is having a detrimental affect on the area.

The Crouch Street site is currently owned by Blumarble, property developers who want to demolish the complex and turn it into flats and shops.

Sirena, however, believes the former picture-house provides the perfect opportunity to promote diversity and inclusivity in the newly-crowned city.

The performer’s proposal suggests the site could operate as a bar and nightclub in the evening and provide a creative outlet during the day.

“A drag bar would be a fantastic statement of joy for the whole community and it could bring all the charm and quirk of this city and give it some character,” they said.

“Drag is inherently for the queer community because of its origins but I believe the commercial value of our artform has finally made our artform for all - which I love.

“I would want this to feel like the absolute safest place in the world for people of the LGBTQ+ community.”

Earlier this month planning inspectors decided proposals submitted by Blumarble should not go ahead, upholding the ruling of councillors in August 2021.

Sirena, who is a president of the Colchester Kings Rugby Club, hopes the decision could now pave the way for their vision to become a reality.

They added: “Some of the strongest people I have ever met are drag artists and I would go as far as saying drag is survival for a lot of the LGBTQ+ community.

“I am good at what I do because I have a unique ability to put a smile on most people’s faces, which in this modern age people really need.

“With the combine forces of The Outhouse, Colchester Pride and Colchester Kings and all our supporting businesses I believe we can create something beautiful.”
