FIRE crews tackling a blaze at a landfill site in Stanway have confirmed it is “under control”.

Firefighters from Colchester, Tiptree and Witham were on the scene in Warren Lane, Stanway, at around 4.48am today.

Crews reported around 500 metres of rubbish was on fire, with lots of smoke billowing up from the scene.

Firefighters requested two additional crews from Halstead and Wivenhoe as well as a water bowser from Halstead to help bring water to the scene.

Two off-road vehicles from Billericay and Stansted were also sent to the scene.

The fire service’s drone team has been assessing the damage from above.

Crews have been working to surround the fire and now have it under control.

Four more crews will be sent to the scene shortly to relieve crews.

Station Manager Gavin Tripp said: “We expect to remain at the scene for several hours to extinguish this fire and I’d like to thank the site staff for their help.

"We’ve working closely with them to get the fire under control.

“If you live near Warren Lane, please continue to keep your windows and doors shut as there is still a lot of smoke coming from the scene.”
