A MAJOR clear up has begun on a scenic country road in Colchester after nine fridge freezers and a barbecue were dumped.

Pictures sent to the Gazette show the fridge freezers dumped sporadically along Bergholt Road.

It is thought the flytipping happened at some point before Saturday evening.

Colchester Council has confirmed it is aware and is in the process of clearing the flytip but says it may take some time.

A resident who spotted the dumped items described it as “frustrating and unnecessary.”

Speaking to the Gazette, they said: “This an incredibly scenic road between West Bergholt and Fordham.

“This is a place that often sees people stop to admire the views across the Colne Valley, the sunrises, the sunsets and the very common sightings of deer. It has created a bit of a stir, as not many of us live on this road.

“It is very frustrating and unnecessary especially as in Colchester the recycling is phenomenal, one of the best around.

“It is a shame, as it is such an eyesore, it is a very scenic road, you hardly have a lot of traffic come through, it’s an ideal place to fly tip and get away unnoticed.

“I was driving to work this morning and there was a beautiful scene of deer in grazing on the field on one side, and all of these abandoned fridges on the other side.”

Colchester Council said it would take "very tough action" against anyone found flytipping in the city.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of a large fly-tip in Bergholt Road and have visited the site to begin clearing it up.

“Unfortunately, the amount of waste that has been dumped is so great, it is going to take more than a day to remove.

“We can assure everybody that the council will take very tough action against anybody found fly-tipping anywhere in our beautiful city and surrounding countryside.”
