The Mercury Theatre has announced a new production of a classical favourite as part of their spring and summer season.
The Colchester venue has announced its new production of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations as part of their upcoming season.
Ahead of opening the premiere of Manjeet Mann’s Carnegie medal-winning young adult novel, Run Rebel, the Mercury Theatre has announced its new rendition of the classic Dickens’ novel, which will be re-imagined and brought to life by their wealth of talent.
The theatre's rendition will be directed by Mercury’s creative director Ryan McBryde and adapted by Gale Childs Daly, with more talent soon to be announced.
Mr McBryde, said: “The reason Dickens’ classic tale remains so popular today is because of its themes of obsession, revenge and class mobility still feel so startling relevant.
“It’s the ultimate coming of age story as Pip learns that his ‘great expectations’, social status and wealth, are less important than loyalty and compassion.
“Gale’s script reads like a thriller; the atmosphere just leaps off the page, pulls you in and doesn’t let you go until the very last word is uttered.”
The production will complete the Mercury Theatre’s spring and summer season alongside the previously announced co-production with Pilot Theatre, Belgrade Theatre, Derby Theatre and York Theatre, showing Run Rebel and Dario Fo’s They Don’t Pay? We Won’t Pay!
The spring and summer season also includes an original piece from the Mercury Creatives alumni, Mia Jerome’s The Instrumental, for young audiences and Derren Brown’s all new Unbelievable, directly ahead of its West End run.
The show is set to take place from May 17, with previews from May 12, running until May 27, with a full cast still yet to be announced.
