THE son of a pensioner who was killed while she crossed the road outside his place of work has paid tribute to his “beautiful” mum.
Michael Coggan, a doctor at the Harewood Surgery in Great Oakley, said he heard the “awful sound” of his mum Penelope Coggan being hit by a car driven by Hivda Altuntop, 21.
“I have met thousands of people in my life and I can say she [Mrs Coggan] was the kindest, most generous and beautiful person any of us have met,” Mr Coggan told Chelmsford Crown Court.
“My brother and I were literally a few yards away when we heard the awful sound of a human impact on a vehicle.
“I was the first to find my mother’s fractured and terribly damaged body facing us.
“I touched her on the face and just said ‘oh, mum’, desperately disbelieving it was her, truly wishing it was me.”
Ms Coggan died at the scene in Harwich Road, Great Oakley.
Her son continued: “To all those who have loved her deeply, the loss was, and is, something none of us could prepare for.
“We could not say goodbye or I love you or hold her. It is terribly cruel and such a waste of a life.”
