A man was injured at an Essex shopping centre after reportedly falling while taking down Christmas decorations.

Police and security have shut off large areas of the Eastgate Shopping Centre following the incident last night.

Shop worker Michelle Brown, 32, said: "I was told a man fell from a height while taking down Christmas decorations.

"I hope he is ok and it sounds terrible. I saw the police cordons and screens by the shops.

"I think everyone was shocked to see all this."

Eastgate centre manager Ian Clark said: "There was an incident at Eastgate last night.

"One member of staff sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. The police are investigating."

Basildon Council has been contacted for comment.
