A BASKETBALL tournament featuring some of the best names Britain has to offer is to be hosted at Essex University next month.

The elite sporting event will see all 12 of England’s top-tier professional women’s teams compete in a tournament, which will unfold across two days from Saturday, January 7, to Sunday, January 8.

Eight games will take place back-to-back with tickets on sale for £5 each day for the event.

Essex Rebels, who compete in the top tier of the Women’s British Basketball Team, will be hoping for a home advantage over the weekend of action at the Essex Sport Arena.

The university’s director of sport, Dr Dave Parry, said the event is part of an ambition for the university to retain its status as one of the best sporting institutions in the east of England.

He said: "Hosting a single game creates a buzz about campus so this promises to be a real carnival of sport that will cement The University of Essex’s place as the region’s number one sporting institution.

"This will be a great weekend for everyone in the region whether you are a seasoned basketball fan or new to the sport."
