Lewis Capaldi, a Scottish singer-songwriter and musician, recently took to the stage at London’s O2  Arena for his sold out arena tour. Many eager fans have been waiting since March of 2020 to see him perform live but due to Covid the tour had to be postponed to September of 2022.

As the show began, a curtain was slowly lifted that uncovered lights which flashed red and clouds of orange coloured smoke that helped showcase Capaldi’s appearance. Behind his silhouette, the musicians were revealed as they played the intro to his striking song ‘Grace’. A bright spotlight was soon pointed onto Capaldi himself that allowed him to be visible to everyone in the crowd, straight away this lead to a lot of atmosphere being created within the arena which lead to cheers from the audience.

For each one of his songs, the colour, brightness and boldness of the lighting changed. He used different colours to correlate with the different moods of his songs e.g blue lighting with a sad song. The bright and boldness of the lights changed depending on the speed and message of the song; in the song, ‘Hollywood’, there was more of a softer grey tone with bright white flashing lights to resemble typical Hollywood and the lyrics of the song.

Capaldi also made great use of the stage and all the features that came along with it, this enabled him to not only get the audience to hear the song but also get us to visualise it. It fully emphasised the depth of all of his songs and truly got the audience to appreciate them. For his song ‘Bruises’, there is a lyric that references being in water, “there must be something in the water”, so they used the screen behind him to put a video of water. He was sat at a piano on part of the stage, this bit of the stage was then raised to mimic him being water. This was something quite different, extraordinary and spectacular to see.

It was clear that he had real love and passion when performing his pieces; throughout the whole night he gave every song all of his love and passion. It really shone through how much he thrived being up on stage and performing for people. To every song the audience were singing along and all cheered at the end of each one, even before he came on, people were chanting his name. For his last song, Capaldi performed his biggest hit , ‘Someone you loved’, at one of the chorus’s he got the audience to sing by themselves truly showcasing their love and appreciation for this song.

From the urge to cry to laughing out loud to screaming out lyrics, it was very much an emotional rollercoaster. The night was absolutely incredible, full of lots of good energy, a buzzy atmosphere and just really enjoyable.
